Editorial Policies
Editorial Policy:
By virtue of the fact that the yearbook is a student conceived, planned, and produced publication, as well as the product of an academic elective program, there are certain guidelines that must be put into practice ethically and legally.
Journalistic in nature, the yearbook attempts to inform and entertain its audience in a broad, fair, and accurate manner on all subjects that affect readers in areas of student life, people, seniors, clubs and academics, and sports. The entire student body of prospective readers constitutes the target audience for the book with secondary audiences including school personnel, community members, and other scholastic journalism groups. The content will focus on coverage that will meet the wants and needs of the majority of these students. Therefore, content and coverage discrepancies will be handled in a democratic fashion within the Publications class.
While the staff not only allows, but also encourages constructive criticism of any part of the book, before or after distribution, content of the volume rests solely in the hands of the Publications students and their adviser. In accordance with Hazelwood V. Kuhlmeier, the Heath High School administration is given access to our publication during production for input.
No material. opinion or otherwise, will be printed which is libelous, irresponsible, advocates an illegal activity, or which the editorial board and/or the adviser deems in poor taste.
Portrait Policy:
All students and school personnel must have their portraits made with the official school portrait photographer to be included in the current volume of the publication. The school-selected photographer provides these photos free of charge.
All students and staff will be afforded at least two opportunities to have their portraits taken or retaken if the need presents itself. The yearbook staff will make the final selection as to which photograph will be used in the publication.
If no picture is available, student/school personnel will be included by listing their names.
By having all portraits taken by the same photographer, under the same conditions, the publications staff can be assured of the highest quality reproduction of all photographs serving the best interests of all students.
Obituary Policy:
Should a student and/or school personnel die anytime during the current coverage period, the staff will treat the death in a tasteful, respectful manner.
The portrait of that person will appear in black and white, and be identified with the name and dates of birth and death along with a special message in an appropriate section of the publication. This sensitive treatment will provide adequate remembrance of the individual for those closely associated while not overemphasizing it for the readers.
A remembrance of a student or school personnel will need to be approved by the individual’s family.
Advertising Policy:
All advertising accepted by the staff must meet the same guidelines as editorial content. Acceptance of advertising does not constitute an endorsement by the school, the staff as a whole, or its individual members.
Advertising program and rates are specifically detailed in the portfolio and contract for businesses and professionals.
Senior Personal Advertisements:
Senior ads are subject to all rules and regulations as described in the advertising policy. Advertising is subject to space availability and will be honored by a first come, first served, basis.
Advertising program and rates are specifically detailed in the portfolio and contract for parents.
